When That Door Closes, Then What?

Is it true that when one door closes, another door opens?

Everyone has heard that old platitude. One door closes, another opens, right? A platitude is a statement that has been used for decades and is heard so often that it loses its meaning and interest. It’s spoken in friendship to give you a whisper of hope when you are down and out. But is it a true statement? It depends.

Is your life half-empty or half-full? How you answer this question determines if you will see an opportunity when a door closes, or the end of the road.

Do you know the entire quote by Alexander Graham Bell? “When one door closes, another door opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the ones which open for us.” Only the first part of this quote is usually remembered, but it is the second part that is important. It is the regret of everything that led to the door being slammed shut in your face that is difficult to process.

Do Billionaires Ever Encounter Closed Doors?

Even the very wealthy know that as long as you live on Earth, you will experience the yin/yang of positive/negative experiences. It is the way this planet is made and evolves. Only by living in solitude would you be able to escape this reality. Most successful people have learned that there are many doors we approach on any given day, and out of many doors, there will be those that close and those that open.

Bell made a good point because staring at, and living in grief about, a closed door for too long will stymie your efforts to turn things around.

Conversely, successful people know that a closed door is “a new beginning.” A closed door “creates space for new opportunities.” The idea is balance, a door closing “disrupts the equilibrium” and “the natural response is to reestablish balance by opening new doors.”

Doors are going to close, and new ones are going to open, and if you can accept this as a part of the business cycle, and be mentally and emotionally prepared, you will have less downtime and more energy to think about opening new doors.

What Does It Take to Open That New Door?

A mature mindset about life and business is important. A mindset of knowledge, wisdom, and the daily practice of self-help affirmations and meditations is the basis of maturity. The reality is that it is up to you to move forward. Only you can decide to see the glass as half-full. You have to “seek out new opportunities” and “take action” when they appear

How Do You Move Forward After That Door Closes?

It is natural to be disappointed, worried, or anxious about the future; however, here are some tips to get you on your way:

  1. Take some time off to relax, go on a trip, get with friends, and surround yourself with loved ones.
  2. Mediate and stay focused on your successes, not failures.
  3. Count your blessings—all the wonderful friends and material things in your life.
  4. Realize you may be down for a while, but never out.
  5. Get extra sleep and enjoy some healthy meals with friends.
  6. Explore breathing exercises.

Manifestation Exercise to Help Open Doors and Bring New Opportunities

Step 1:

Write down all the successes in your life, both personally and professionally. In two columns with headers of ‘Plus’ and ‘Minus’, list all the pluses and all the negatives in your life.

Step 2:

Be proactive and decide to focus on the positive aspects in your life, and when your mind turns the other way, bring it back to the present moment to focus on all of your successes.

Step 3:

Imagine you are standing in front of a closed door. On the door is a sign that reads: New Opportunities Await You. Approach the door and watch as it opens for you as you cross the threshold and move through the door of your new future. You can also physically stand in front of any door, and even post a sign that says “New Opportunities Await You.”

Step 4:

Open the door and inside the room, visualize various opportunities you would like to explore, and realize and be grateful that now you have the time, energy and resources to move in a different direction in your life. Move around the room, like you would at a conference. Imagine tables with brochures and booklets on each table. They are yours for the asking!

Step 5:

You suddenly realize that now, in this moment, you have the space and time to do something else that you have been wanting to do for a long time. Take your time with the brochures, see what they offer, and decide to take some home to study further.

Be grateful for these new experiences and new opportunities, and become proactive to direct your life in the way you want it to go forward!

Realize that not only did a new door open for you, and inside the room are hundreds of viable choices for you!

Practice entering this door and discovering the treasures within multiple times per day, and always be grateful for these wonderful new and open doors!
