Paul McCartney Said Do This: Accentuate the Positive, Eliminate the Negative
This has been a popular song lyric through the generations, first in the 1940s and as recently as 2012 sung by Paul McCartney, who recorded "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive" and included it on his 2012 album, Kisses on the Bottom. “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive” is a 1944 song written by Harold Arlen with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The song was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 18th Academy Awards in 1945 after being used in the film Here Come the Waves. Many artists covered it over the years, including McCartney.”
It’s a popular song because it taps into the human psyche, helping us to appreciate and enjoy the positive aspects of life. It has also been covered by other famous artists including Jennifer Hudson and Aretha Franklin.
Positivity and negativity are facts of life, and cannot be denied. However, you do have incredible choices and free will to determine HOW you view the positive and negative aspects of life’s events. Choosing to embrace the positive affects your health and well-being for the better. When you are positive, you are naturally more healthy, and usually more wealthy.
A GOOD EXAMPLE OF YOUR PQ (POSITIVITY QUOTIENT)
An example of accentuating the positive is how you look at a glass of water – is it half-full (positive) or half-empty (negative)? It is up to you to decide between the positive and negative thought processes of your mind, as well as what you choose to enjoy in life. In use for many years, this phrase helps humans keep their minds aligned with their positive resources, and it works magic.
The smartest and most successful people understand how positivity or negativity affects your life. It’s more productive to spend time with people who are cheerful and cooperative than those who are critical and difficult. Being positive takes less energy than being negative.
Psychology Today discusses how positive attitudes impact more than just perspective. People with positive attitudes experience more happiness, social success, academic achievement, and career success than those who tend to be gloomy. “Negativity is stressful both for the negative person and for those who have to spend time with them. Although some people are blessed with more optimistic temperaments than others, positive attitudes and habits can be learned, as can negative ones.”
How do you feel when you are around someone who complains all the time, is extremely critical, and is unhappy with their friendships and life? It can be miserable. In reality, their aim is not to make you miserable; their goal is to get a sympathetic ear.
Everyone goes through hardships and needs a supportive presence in their life, either as a shoulder to cry on or offer advice. Often unresolvable situations and stress overtake the cognitive ability to rectify a situation. Certainly, not everything is fixable, such as serious illnesses for yourself or a loved one. But what you CAN do is accentuate the positive. It may be difficult to do, but to live your life in the best way possible, it is necessary to turn your mental ship around.

Tips on How to Stay Positive
- Take a good look at your thoughts. What is your first reaction to something being said or proposed? Do you immediately think about all the negative aspects or do you try to see the good?
- What is your first reaction when meeting a new person? Is it a suspicion? Is it fear? Or jealousy? There are many negative reactions you could feel. If it is inherently negative, ask yourself what you can do about changing your mindset when you meet new people. This could be critical to your success!
- Don’t underestimate the power of positivity! If you smirk at “thinking positive" then study the psychological effects of positivity. It has a ripple effect
Mirror Exercise:
Pretend you are meeting someone new. Block out what you are feeling and/or thinking about that person. Instead, start practicing a new mindset. Begin by saying positive affirmations about meeting someone new. Below are some examples:
- “I like this person.”
- “This person has a lot to offer.”
- “I don’t know anything about this person, so I give him/her the huge benefit of the doubt.”
- “I will give myself and this person plenty of time to get to know each other before I make opinions or judgments.”
This will help your brain stop making snap judgements about people and focus on positive interactions in new relationships (romantic or platonic). By allowing a new person in your life the opportunity to reveal various sides of their personality, you can enrich your circle of friends and enjoy more variety of social events.
Now, imagine this new person is thinking positive thoughts about you and that they also are willing to give this new friendship a chance. In other words, think positive about both of you, and see what happens! You might be surprised when you begin to open up your mind and heart to all the positive possibilities!
Also, ask yourself questions about how you feel about your reactions to others. Are you more “likely to give positive or negative feedback to yourself and others? When faced with a complex situation, do you become frustrated or energized?”
Save this slogan. Make it a quote on your home or lock screen. Or print it! Keep a copy in your desk drawer, by your phone, in your car, and on your nightstand to think about this instead of problems before you go to sleep:
"I will look for the positive aspects in all people, in all business relationships, and in all situations.
And remember…. accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative!"
