It’s for the Birds!

How bird-watching changes your brain for success!

It’s for the Birds!

Take a break and walk or drive to the nearest park, find a good spot to sit and relax, and do nothing! You can do this almost anywhere with any free time you have, however short.

Now that you’re sitting at the park doing nothing, look for the birds. Watch them. Look at their colors and observe their behavior. As you watch them, you’ll feel your body relax, your stress fade, and suddenly, an idea appears. That work problem? You have a solution!

There are innumerable mental health benefits from watching the birds, including the power of visualization, the flow of intuitive information, the ability to think clearly, and stress reduction so you can manifest success on all levels.

Science Says: Bird-Watching Lowers Stress

These benefits aren’t just me saying this! According to an article in Time Magazine, bird-watching “improved people’s mental well-being for up to eight hours.” Birds and birdsongs even help with anxiety, depression, stress, and overall satisfaction. “Being near 14 additional bird species [...] was as satisfying as earning an extra $150 a month.”

Additionally, memorizing the types of birds helps sharpen your mind and fortify memory. As you learn the various types of birds and the behavior specific to each group, you find that you are outside more! Connecting to nature produces positive benefits.

Connecting to nature isn’t always about long weekends camping in the mountains or trips to the ocean; it can be as simple as stepping outside your door.

What is it about nature that calls to us? There is no doubt that “nature helps improve concentration by decreasing mental fatigue by lowering blood pressure and levels of stress-inducing hormones such as adrenaline, cortisol, and norepinephrine” according to a different study in the same Time article.

The best thing is that it’s really accessible! Birds are everywhere. All you need to do is look for them! Think about where there may be birds close to you or your office. Search for city parks, green areas, and even neighborhood parks where birds may congregate. One of the biggest “bird treasure chests” may be in city parks because “studies show that even a stroll through a city park decreases stress, sharpens concentration, and improves long-term mental health outcomes.”

We’re so used to their presence we don’t even notice them most of the time. Do you see them when you casually glance out your windows? Probably not. The same way you don’t see your nose because it’s always there! We’re so accustomed to them that our minds simply factor them into the scene, so we take them for granted.

Decreasing Stress, Sharpening Concentration, Improving Long-Term Mental Health

When  you need a break, try this:

Take yourself and a problem you are working on to the park. Sit and relax, listen to the sounds of nature, and feel the warmth of the sun or the soft breeze on your skin. You smell the water, and it is fresh, and once in a while, a splash comes your way.

All around are birds of many types, flying and fluttering, and picking up unknowable bits of this and that all around the park.

You have been thinking about a solution. Well, not really. You have been thinking about a problem. And wondering about a solution. But nothing comes. You have tried everything, and looked up all the facts. Talked to some folks about it. And you are stuck.

You’ve been absentmindedly munching on a snack, some cheese and crackers you brought along. Someone feeds the birds, and you watch in fascination.

Suddenly, you are very interested in the birds, the types of birds, and what they are doing. You notice how beautiful they are, and then suddenly, some ideas pop into your mind.

You listen and listen some more, and you begin to see an avenue to success. The more you listen, the more excited you become. The stress is gone, you feel relaxed and confident, ideas are flowing like the water, then bingo! It happens! The solution!

Make Bird-Watching a Daily Habit

Bird-watching is so accessible and beneficial. Making it a daily habit goes a long way for your mental health and manifestation practices. If you are looking to make it a daily habit, here are a few steps to get you started. Consider adapting these as you need.

Step One:

Recognize that you have to get away from the problem to relax and allow solutions to come to you.

Step Two:

You are not always able to travel ‘away’ for a break, but you can take daily breaks, either at the office or at home, or both.

Step Three:

Within a short distance are places you can watch the birds. This may be as close as a courtyard in your office complex or a short walk or drive to a nearby park. Neighborhoods are great places to look for birds!

Step Four:

Be willing to allow yourself, to permit yourself to relax, and then let your intuition kick in for you.

Step Five:

Remember, your intuition belongs to you and is in your personal treasure chest of tools to use when you need it! You have intuition for a reason!

Go Where the Birds Are

Learn to look and to listen to their beautiful songs. Watch as they navigate their way around in nature. Let go of your problems and allow your intuition to step in for you. Relax and watch as your brain changes your thoughts and how your body feels, and begins to work for you as you listen to the sounds of nature!

It’s for the Birds!

Recognize your need to change your thought process and your environment, and learn how to communicate with nature! Let go and let nature surround you with beauty, and the answers you are seeking!
