What is this relationship with money? It’s how you think about money, how you feel about money, what you were taught about it as a child, and what you expect from your money today.

It is and can be an emotional relationship with feelings of joy when you have it, feelings of despair when you need it but don’t have it, feelings of relief, and feelings of stress.

All of these feelings impact how you feel at any given point of the day and certainly influence your interactions with others. Experiencing financial hardship creates negative associations with money. Others might view it as sinful to have more than you need.

Examine your relationship with money. Is it healthy? How do you view money?

Is Your Relationship With Money Holding You Back?

If you don’t feel you deserve money or success, then it is likely you will have neither. If your inner thoughts about money are related to your inner feelings of worthiness, then maybe you always stop right before the finish line to complete your success.

Why DO You Stop Before the Finish Line?

Do you self-sabotage your success in ways you don’t understand or notice? Perhaps you feel guilty when spending money or subconsciously feel like you do not deserve good things? According to CNBC these are all ways that an unhealthy relationship with money might manifest. Other ways include feelings of inadequacy and overspending to impress as a result. If you find yourself doing these behaviors, examine your relationship with money. Look at your history with money, going back all the way to childhood. Even if it wasn’t your money, but your family or environment, the impact is still there.

How to Have a Healthy Relationship With Money

A healthy relationship with money is understanding that it is a tool that will help you to live a healthier, more fulfilling life in every way.

  1. Understanding how money flows in and out of your life is critical to using it the way you want to.
  2. You may realize that money is power, but it is you who decides how this power is used in your life, not the other way around.
  3. Educate yourself about investments, savings, expenses, and goal-setting.
  4. Think about money as your friend. It serves you well, is always there when you need it, helps you enjoy the finer things in life, and stands by you as a silent partner when you need it the most.

It might not seem like much, but it is important to have a healthy relationship with money. Doing so prevents your financial situation from dictating your quality of life. It will allow you to embrace “opportunities without the fear that financial constraints often bring.”

Growing Your Trust in Money

As you are building your foundation step by step, your relationship with money develops into one of trust as you see your assets grow over time and are there when you need them. It is also important to manage your money investments, savings, real estate, and other assets so that you build a solid financial foundation.

How Your Relationship With Money Impacts All Your Friendships

Most relationships are based on trust, goodwill for each other, and emotional fulfillment. When one relationship is out of balance, it can affect how you interact with people and situations. If stress is a daily factor in your life, this affects your personality and how you treat others.

If you are comfortable with having money, earning more, and in saving and investing, your cushion of security grows underneath you. If you are nervous about money, that will show up in conversations with friends and in your actions toward them.

Commit to spending more time on your money relationship by exploring negative feelings and thoughts about it, and more importantly, why these thoughts are in your consciousness.

Decide to do three things:

  1. Explore where these negative ideas originated.
  2. Practice affirmations about money that present it in a good way to consciousness, such as:
    1. Money is a wonderful asset to have.
    2. Money is flowing my way every day.
    3. Money is a good friend to me.

Practice good thoughts about money and it and your friendships will continue to grow!
